Just another reason to love Rise Against
Wow, words cannot describe how I feel right now. I have just seen their most recent video “Make it Stop (September’s Children)” and I am in love with them even more.
You might ask: What is the big deal with them? Well, I will give you my thoughts here…..
Rise Against brings forth issues that are often ignored by other bands and people in the music industry. In their latest video, “Make it Stop (September’s Children)”, they talk about suicide from those that are bullied for being gay or lesbian. Looking over my iTunes and other songs that I have heard, there really aren’t songs that really talk about that. There is also “Youth of the Nation” - by P.O.D. which talks about school shootings.
Back to the subject of the music video. When the CD came out, it was one of my favorite songs on the album. A week or so later, an event happened. For those that attend UC Merced, you know about this event. This event was of the suicide of a sophomore here named Adam Wood. I was an acquaintance to him, as I had only really talked to him a few times. But, I have some friends that were really close to him. So, needless to say, it affected me.
The song “Make it Stop (September’s Children)” began to remind me of Adam, and I admit that for a while I couldn’t listen to it. That is, until I watched the music video. Rise Against and their director did a fantastic job at making the music video. It was hard to watch, knowing that things like that actually happen.
This brings me to another subject: hate. I am tired of people bullying and teasing others for being who they are. No one deserves hatred for being who they are. Sure, perhaps murderers, but come on people, those that decide to be in the LBGT community are not hurting anyone. I respect those that come out, as it takes a lot of courage when not everyone is accepting.
People, wake up and stop the H8! They saying “Sticks and stones may brake my bones, but words may never hurt me” - come on, don’t kid yourself over believing that is true when suicide happens. People shouldn’t be punished or tormented for being who they are, and for loving who they wish to love. Love is love is love - end of story.
This leads me to another thought, as I have gotten in several arguments with people about allowing same-sex marriages to happen. I believe that anyone should be able to marry anyone that they love. Others are not so agreeing with this statement because “it would ruin the sanctity of marriage”. If that is the case, then why isn’t divorce illegal like same-sex marriage is? Think about it.
Stop the H8.
